A Conversation with Sherry Cady

چکیده

W as there life on Mars? If so, microorganisms would have left chemical signatures in the rocks, as they have done here on Earth. Astrobiologist Sherry Cady of Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is helping NASA Mars mission teams decide where to search for fossilized evidence of life on the red planet. As part of the SETI Institute’s NASA Astrobiology Institute team, she studies Earth environments that are analogues for potential ecosystems on Mars, including hot springs, deserts, and the remains of ancient lakes. She talked with Deirdre Lockwood about how these extreme environments inform the search for life in outer space.

Reversible inactivation and desiccation tolerance of silicified viruses.

Long-distance host-independent virus dispersal is poorly understood, especially for viruses found in isolated ecosystems. To demonstrate a possible dispersal mechanism, we show that bacteriophage T4, archaeal virus Sulfolobus spindle-shaped virus Kamchatka, and vaccinia virus are reversibly inactivated by mineralization in silica under conditions similar to volcanic hot springs. In contrast, ba...

A new potent secondary amphipathic cell-penetrating peptide for siRNA delivery into mammalian cells.

RNA interference constitutes a powerful tool for biological studies, but has also become one of the most challenging therapeutic strategies. However, small interfering RNA (siRNA)-based strategies suffer from their poor delivery and biodistribution. Cell-penetrating peptides (CPPs) have been shown to improve the intracellular delivery of various biologically active molecules into living cells a...
